| Email: An Ex-Minister's "Reading By Christopher"She trusted her health and well-being to Browne and Dufresne, and lived to regret it. Published: Jul 11 2008
BackgroundI recently received an email from an ex-minister of Sylvia Browne's Society of Novus. I had heard of this woman, and parts of her sad story, from another ex-minister of SNS, who had been encouraging her to come forward and share her experience. This article presents on that email, in hopes that it will help others, and through doing so, help the woman herself. The EmailHere - with the author's permission - is that email. As with all emails I publish here, it should be noted that this is simply one person's opinion.
AnalysisOne has to wonder how different the prognosis of this woman's medical condition might have been had she not been assured by Dufresne that the numbness in her legs was nothing to worry about, and had sought out medical advice earlier than she did. It is easy, from the outside, to criticize this woman for trusting Dufresne and Browne. But remember, she was a minister in Browne's church. She had been indoctrinated into believing that Browne and her son had access, through their "spirit guides," to the mind of God. For her to have questioned anything they told her would be to express doubt in the religion she had devoted years of her life to study. The religion she had probably spent much of her time teaching to others. According to all of the ex-Novus ministers I have been in touch with, expressing doubt in anything said by Browne or Dufresne would result in harsh words from Browne's staff, and disapproval, if not ostracism from the community of believers with whom she had spent so much time and energy. This pressure, spoken and unspoken, both from peers and from those in higher office within her church, is a strong influence - perhaps stronger than an outsider can appreciate. How many other people over the years have put their trust in Browne or Dufresne when it came to matters of their health, and later suffered for it? ConclusionI have heard, from another ex-minister of Novus, that it was not easy for this woman to come forward with her painful story. My special thanks to her for doing do, and for allowing me to share it with the readers of this site. Perhaps it will help someone else to avoid the mistake of putting their trust, even their very lives and health, into the hands of two people who are not deserving of that trust: Sylvia Browne and her son, Christopher Dufresne. |
